© Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Usher stepped out Wednesday night to host a fundraiser for the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project, an organization Cruise founded in the wake of September 11 to help firefighters, police officers, and EMTs who were exposed to hazardous materials circulating in the air following the collapse of the World Trade Center. "I started this project out of the great respect I have for the courage and service of the rescue workers," Cruise told the crowd. "When I started this project, it was because I was in a position where I knew that I could help. It wasn't just about wanting to, but knowing I could, so I knew I had to do it." The controversial "detoxification" is based on Scientology principles, not scientific ones, and the method of flushing poisons from the rescue workers' bodies involves an intense regimen of jogging, sauna and ingesting oils and high doses of niacin. Cruise has raised $1.6 million for the detox program, and city officials have kicked in additional funds. ...

STAVROS Niarchos never paid a homeless man $100 to pour a cup of soda over his head just for laughs. That's what Us Weekly reported a few weeks ago. The Greek shipping heir, boyfriend of Paris Hilton, actually offered $100 to a passer-by if he'd drench a nearby paparazzo who was videotaping him. After screening the footage, PAGE SIX can report that Niarchos, in an SUV with his head largely hidden under a hood, started off offering just $10. "Do it now. You have nothing to lose. I swear to you on my life," he pleads. When the man hesitates, Niarchos say, "I'll give you $100. Don't be a p - - - y . . . You have 5 seconds." As Niarchos counts down, the man hurls the drink at the cameraman. We assume he collected a C-note.

MISSING honeymooner George Smith became star-struck by C-list booze beast Tara Reid just hours before he fell overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last July. Smith's wife, Jennifer Hagel Smith, told MSNBC's Joe Scarborough that Reid posed for a picture with her ecstatic hubby while they were visiting the Greek island of Mykonos, where Reid was filming an episode of her alcoholic E! channel travel show, "Taradise." "He finally worked up the courage and asked her for a picture, which I still have," Hagel-Smith told Scarborough. "He was so proud of that picture."

HAUGHTY hairstylist Pascale Bensimon turned himself into Aspen, Colo., police this week after a 14-month investigation implicated him in the theft of Kevin Costner's laptop, which contained the star's private wedding photos. Bensimon, owner of the swanky Aspen salon that bears his name, was hired to pamper guests attending Costner's wedding to Christine Baumgartner on Sept. 25, 2004, at the actor's ranch. Costner's Apple Powerbook G4 disappeared that day along with a digital camera that contained pictures of the nuptials, according to the Aspen Daily News. Mark Sheppard, a computer consul tant for the Costner family, sus pected Bensimon. He posed as a freelance writer and told Bensi mon he was interested in a story about his high-priced hairdos. When Bensimon brought out a laptop to show Sheppard photos of the 'dos at his salon, Sheppard matched the serial number to Costner's computer. Bensi mon turned himself in Monday and was released after posting a $5,000 bond. He's due back in court next month.
NY Daily News M Nancy Grace says she's not out to gouge her alleged stalker. "I have never approved seeking money from [homeless mental patient Joseph Raymond] Loegering," the CNN anchor said in response to our story yesterday about her civil suit against him. "Unfortunately, it was included in the petition without my knowledge. It is being corrected immediately." ...

The nasty border battle between Jim Belushi and his next-door neighbor Julie Newmar is over. Belushi had accused Newmar of wrecking his fence, spying, playing loud music and badmouthing him to neighbors in a bid to drive him out of his Brentwood home. The News' Michelle Caruso reports that the feudists just reached a confidential settlement in the $4 million harassment suit Belushi filed last year against the 72-year-old Catwoman. Jay-Z lost $25,000 on a bet Wednesday night - and he couldn't be happier. The rappin' New Jersey Nets investor wagered Charlotte Bobcats owner Robert Johnson that his team would reach 80 points first - with the winnings going to tri-state schools. McAdams wouldn't talk, maybe because she was afraid we'd ask whether it's true she's hooked up with her "Notebook" co-star Ryan Gosling. But Golden Globe-nominated Parker was happy to chat about the affecting comedy, in which she must weather a hellish holiday at the home of her boyfriend (Mulroney). She said she and real-life husband Matthew Broderick didn't endure the same family vetting. "My brothers introduced us, so Matthew came pre-approved," she told us. "My family was happy I brought home anyone"...

Dates run though March 18th in Austin, to be followed by a stint in Canada in April and May. © BEN FOLDS, DESTINY'S CHILD's MICHELLE WILLIAMS, JOE JACKSON, NEIL SEDAKA, SUZANNE VEGA and LORI ANDERSON will perform at a February 1st tribute concert to Canadian singer-songwriter JONI MITCHELL at New York's Carnegie Hall. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Music for Youth, which develops music education programs and scholarships for children.

© BREAD drummer MIKE BOTTS died of cancer on December 9th at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. In addition to playing with the Seventies outfit, Botts recorded and toured with TINA TURNER, LINDA RONSTADT and EDDIE MONEY. He was sixty-one years old.

©Songwriter JERRY LYNN WILLIAMS, 57, died of kidney and liver failure on November 25th in St. Martin in the French West Indies. Williams wrote the DELBERT McCLINTON hit "Giving It Up for Your Love," as well as five tracks on ERIC CLAPTON's Journeyman album, and "I Will Not Be Denied" off BONNIE RAITT's Grammy-winning Nick of Time. Williams also played guitar and toured with LITTLE RICHARD's band -- where he learned to play lead guitar from fellow band member JIMMY JAMES, later known as JIMI HENDRIX -- when he was only fourteen years old.

© Legendary guitarist BUDDY GUY is up for the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award at the 2006 Blues Music Awards (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards), up against late vocalist/guitarist LITTLE MILTON CAMPBELL, guitarist MAGIC SLIM, singer/pianist MARCIA BALL and singer BOBBY RUSH. Campbell, Slim and Ball grabbed the most nominations in total, with four nods apiece. This year's awards ceremony will take place on May 11th at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis.

© MASTER P will replace his teenage son, rapper/actor ROMEO, on the second season of the ABC reality competition Dancing With the Stars, airing January 5th. Romeo was forced to bow out due to a basketball injury. Other contestants include 98 DEGREES member DREW LACHEY (NICK LACHEY's brother), NFL great Jerry Rice, and actresses Tatum O'Neal and Tia Carrere.

©The Bravo network will air a special holiday episode of R&B artist BOBBY BROWN's reality show, Being Bobby Brown: Christmas With the Browns, on December 21st. Brown and wife (and diva) WHITNEY HOUSTON will be seen preparing for and living through a holiday gathering at their Atlanta home. Brown's series, which originally aired this past summer, became a cult hit with its insider's view of the sometimes troubled couple's family life and Brown's legal woes.
