Longtime ABC Anchor Bill Beutel Dies (AP via FoxNews)Beutel had a long stint as television news anchor and host of the show that became ABC's Good Morning America. His trademark signoff "Good luck and be well" closed WABC's nightly local newscast for more than 30 years. NYT: Though Beutel's tenure at ABC's Eyewitness News stretched from 1970 to 2001, his on-air personality was most strongly defined in the first 16 years. NYDN: Beutel was a "father figure."

Hachette Shut Out of Ellies Again (WWD)Not since 2000, when Premiere was a finalist in the reviews and criticism category, has a Hachette Filipacchi magazine been nominated for a National Magazine Award, and not since 1993, when American Photo took home a general excellence award, has one of them won. Magnet Media

Dear friends and colleagues:
It was wonderful to see so many of you on February 20th at the 2nd Annual Zoom In Awards, where we celebrated legends and pioneers in film and television, and honored outstanding achievements by professionals and students in editing, cinematography and graphics / visual effects.
Five years ago, Magnet Media was established as an educational media company designed to serve the entertainment and media industry. Little did we know the scope of the challenge before us: High Definition, Video on Demand, podcasts, wikis, digital downloads, blogs, mobile content, digital cinema, subscription services, branded entertainment, internet video… and on and on. Remaining on top of changing technology has never been as challenging or as important to success as it is today. But as much as the process of producing and distributing content continues to evolve at a rapid pace, the core values - that signify quality entertainment and media - remain timeless.
This is where the Zoom In Awards come in: honoring pioneers and legends in film and television, alongside working professionals and students. Each of our Lifetime Achievement Honorees this year has been a mentor, and the impact that they've had on both the industry as a whole and on the lives of individuals will live on for generations. The Zoom In Awards remind our professional nominees that as they move forward to remember to give back to students and other emerging artists. And for our student nominees, the Zoom In Awards present an opportunity to draw on the wisdom of those who have come before even as they blaze their own paths ahead.
In this Special Edition of the Zoom In Newsletter, we're bringing the Zoom In Awards to you. For a limited time, you can view the tribute reels for our honorees online:
Legendary film editor Dede Allen (Bonnie & Clyde, Reds, Dog Day Afternoon, Breakfast Club) whose rule-breaking work changed the face of editorial approaches in Hollywood, and giving her a permanent home in film history.
Jon Kamen, chairman and CEO of @radicalmedia, who founded a cutting edge commercial production house that has consistently transcended the aesthetic zeitgeist for the advertising industry.
Geoff Gilmore, who, in his role as head of the Sundance Film Festival since 1990, has been both a visionary and a driving force in the independent film revolution.
You may also view highlights from the finalist nominees in the student and professional categories, as well as short highlights from the Zoom In Awards evening, which include selections from the speeches given by our honorees, as well as by our presenters: David Linde, co-chair of Focus Features (Brokeback Mountain, Constant Gardener), Matt Miller from the AICP and auteur director Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde, Alice's Restaurant, Night Moves).
Many thanks to all of our sponsors, nominees, honorees, presenters, contributors, attendees and the hardworking Magnet Media staff for making the 2nd Annual Zoom In Awards a night celebrating great work across the continuum of industry experience. May we all remember the importance of mentoring the younger generation, acknowledging the wisdom gained from experience, and using technology in inventive ways to create lasting work.

Best regards,Megan Cunningham

MEMPHIS, TN (March 8, 2006) - The National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc., the ultimate network of entertainment industry female powerhouses, has confirmed the launch of an affiliate network in the City of Memphis on March 9, 2006.
Dr. Tonya Butler, a professor at The University of Memphis and entertainment lawyer has been named President of the NABFEME Memphis Network. The new network will raise the profile and elevate the awareness of women of color in the entertainment business in the City of Memphis. NABFEME was formed with a mission to raise the profile and increase the awareness of minority women in music and entertainment. NABFEME accomplishes its mission through activities that foster empowerment, education, mentoring, career development and networking.
According to Dr. Butler, "NABFEME is one of the few networking organizations that instill a sense of pride in yourself, your work and your professional relationships. I have been an active member since the organizations inception, and have been amazed at the level of contacts I am exposed to on a daily basis. Women that you didnt think yourself worthy to be in the same room with, sincerely and openly share their experiences and their strategies for success in the music and entertainment industry. The City of Memphis is fertile ground for the networking opportunities that only NABFEME can offer.

NABFEME is led by volunteer entertainment executives and Memphis joins as number 17 amongst other major cities across the USA who host affiliate NABFEME networks. The NABFEME Memphis Network will hold its "official" kick off reception Thursday, March 9, 2006, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., at the Center for Southern Folklore at 119 S. Main Street, Memphis, TN. It is sponsored in part by A & R Barbeque-Hickory Hill, Dbos Buffalo Wings & Things, Equones Catering, Jump Mobile, and Pepsi. Many of Memphis' most accomplished and established music managers, artists, composers, agents, film, television, cable, producers, radio, theater, athletes, attorneys and entertainment executives will attend the very first event of its type in Memphis. Guests will be prominent Memphis entertainment executives and professionals from the State of Tennessee, including corporate and municipal partners. Performances will include NABFEME members, "Radiance" and Memphis duo "Men-nefer."

The Center for Southern Folklore was founded in 1972 by Judy Peiser and Bill Ferris and features the work of various local folk visual artists and an extensive archive of photos documenting Southern history from Rev. L.O. Taylor.

Founded in 1999 by record industry trailblazer Johnnie Walker, NABFEME supports and empowers professional women of color, executives, managers, and technicians in the music and entertainment industries. More than 2,500 women worldwide have joined this stellar nonprofit organization, whose purpose is to assist with the economic and career development of women in entertainment.

VNU Buyout Complete (NYT)The Dutch publishing and market research company that owns ACNielsen, Billboard and Editor and Publisher was sold to a consortium of private equity investors for about $9 billion in cash, or slightly more than 28.50 euros a share. Reuters: The deal marks a stark reversal for the Netherlands-based company, which was poised to double its size less than a year ago with plans to buy healthcare data provider IMS Health. Marketwatch: The company will be kept together for at least 18 months.
Google Mistakenly Puts Ad Targets Online (Reuters)The previously undisclosed presentation notes stated that Google's core advertising business was expected to grow by nearly 60 percent to $9.5 billion in 2006 but that profit margins in its mainstay AdSense business could be squeezed this year and beyond. AP: Company tells investors to disregard leak. NYP: The blunder, which knocked down Google's shares $3.65 to $364.45, came on the heels of a similar snafu.
Pinch Gets Chilly Reception at 'State of the Times' Speech (Gawker)The first question was about the stock options that Sulzberger got rid of to give himself and the other execs big bonuses. He deflected that question, but then business columnist Floyd Norris asked it again, quoting more numbers. Norris asked him to rescind his bonuses to save jobs. Media Mob: Sulzberger discussed the paper's efforts to expand its online and digital operations in a newspaper industry that's mired in struggle. NYP: Newspaper Guild members have already had to give up their raises for the year to rescue their embattled healthcare coverage, and 500 employees are losing their jobs.

Little News About Jill Carroll, but Hope Remains (E&P)On the two-month anniversary of freelancer Jill Carroll's abduction in Iraq, little new information on her whereabouts or status is known, according to editors at the Christian Science Monitor. The last image of her appeared in a video last month.
Absolute Savior? (NYP)Real estate magnate William B. May says he is riding to the rescue of the upscale city magazine, which laid off its 30-plus person staff last month. May said he hoped to meet with some key people last night, and eventually restart with about eight editorial staffers. [Second item.]
As Newspapers Retreat, Will Local Communities Follow? (California Magazine)Michael Zielenziger: When enough people congregate in a defined geographical space, a community finds its larger, formal voice, traditionally around a newspaper. But the Internet has shattered this tidy tradition, displacing a medium that built community in a defined locale.
Voice Readers Vent About Sylvester Fabrications (VV)Mark Forman: Sylvester should be sacked. I appreciate that he apologized, but he lacks credibility, and apologies don't equate to ethics. He got caught, so he said he's sorry. Even Oprah raked what's-his-name over the coals when she found out he was writing fiction instead of alleged fact.
Bob Woodruff 'Still Has a Face for TV' (NYDN)His speech is still only "a couple sentences here, a few words there," brother David Woodruff told ABC's Good Morning America. "He's on very heavy pain medication still. He's not talking up a blue streak, he's not sitting there having long conversations with anybody."

Unsolicited Advice for New Atlantic Editor (Slate)Jack Shafer: James Bennet will have to tell owner David Bradley that his approach to running a magazine devoted to narrative journalism is flawed and have a good retort when Bradley answers that the same system netted him $142 million when his company went public in the late 1990s.
VF's Cover Whims (WWD)Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter is developing a fickle reputation. After replacing Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong with Natalie Portman for April's cover, he's now given the front to Teri Hatcher, who is talking publicly about an uncle who sexually abused her when she was a child.

Howard Stern Bashes Les Moonves, CBS on Fox [TVNewser]In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity today, Howard Stern went on the offensive against Les Moonves and CBS.
Literati Work Out Their Memoir Issues [GalleyCat]NYTBR editor Sam Tanenhaus had been pretty dismissive of James Frey and A Million Little Pieces throughout the discussion. When asked how he would have covered the story differently, he responded: "It's not the sort of story I would have reported," Tanenhaus said. "I barely read our own coverage, I didn't watch Oprah ... I found it profoundly uninteresting."
SI Gets 'Barroid' Book Exclusive, Continues Streak of Sports Drug Coverage [FishbowlNY]What's more interesting to us, though, is SI managing editor Terry McDonell's note, which outlines the magazine's long history of breaking drug-related sports stories. And even more fascinating is the gallery of SI drug covers, which gives us perhaps the first and last reason to type "Brian Bosworth" on this blog.
Gratuitous Sopranos References [FishbowlLA]The new Sopranos season begins this weekend, which means a) it'll be easier to get a table at Jar for the next thirteen Sunday nights; and b) it's time for another slew of awkward, lazy Sopranos references and comparisons in the media.
What's the Situation With The Situation? [FishbowlDC]We're not sure which is more sad: That Tucker could potentially suffer another show cancellation, or that Kathleen Matthews will have to endure more time without her husband as MSNBC slowly turns into "Chris Matthews TV."
Can Google Commit Libel? [MBToolBox]"Lawyers acting for the Arsenal and England [soccer player Ashley Cole] want the internet company to disclose why typing his name into the search engine generates 'See results for: ashley cole gay'." Apparently they don't talk about 'Google Bombing' much on the football field.
The American Idol of Design. Kind Of. [Unbeige]We saw the promo for American Inventor during the Oscars and got pretty excited — they've finally equated the ability to design a product with other talents like singing and dancing with stars. Don't worry, it will still be as captivating as those other American shows, crying included.

Wine Classes NYC

Best Cellar List

How could you? After all this time.
Ordering cosmos (cosmos?!) like they’re going out of style.
Because they did. Along with the millennium.
Salvage your dignity, woman (or, for shame, man!) and get thee to Cellar 72, the new UES wine shop headed by Nice Matin wine director Guy Goldstein.
The floor is patrolled by sommeliers from Per Se, Picholine, and Barbounia, who are on hand to help you sort through 3,000 options and lend advice on what to serve at posh parties or what to pair with Chinese take-out.
For the wine-slurping amateur, Cellar 72 introduces its first American Sommelier Association class, an eight-week course that starts March 9. Sake programs and blind tastings are also on tap as part of Cellar’s ongoing curriculum.
Don’t forget to enroll in Mixology A-Z, a series of themed cocktail classes on the latest drinking trends.
Just one word of advice: Keep your Long Island Iced Tea questions to yourself.
Cellar 72, 1355 Second Avenue, at 72nd Street (212-639-9463 or cellar72.com).

CBS Sues Howard Stern for Breach of Contract (NYT)CBS Radio has filed a lawsuit against Stern, charging that he used his last months on the air there to build up his future employer, Sirius Satellite Radio, and gained financial advantages through a stock sale at the expense of CBS. CBS Press Release: Suit charges that Sirius intentionally induced Stern to breach his contractual provisions by offering to accelerate Stern's payment of millions of dollars in stock options to promote Sirius on CBS airwaves. NYP: At a press conference, Stern lashed out at CBS honcho Les Moonves, accusing him of pursuing a "personal vendetta" to divert attention from CBS Radio's plummeting ratings. LAT: Stern's attorney said CBS could have punished Ste rn in the more than 14 months he was on the air after he shook up the radio industry by giving notice that he was jumping to Sirius. WSJ: The lawsuit comes as CBS Radio is beginning to feel the sting of Stern's departure.
TheStreet.com Subpoenaed in SEC Probe (AP)The financial news website and its co-founder and major shareholder, James Cramer, were served subpoenas by the SEC about two weeks ago in connection with an inquiry into allegations of stock manipulation.
Showtime May Revive Arrested Development (Cleveland Plain Dealer)Mark Dawidziak: Although Showtime executives say no deal is yet in place, it is being reported that the premium cable channel is giving new life to Arrested Development.
If TV Is Free, Can You Steal It? (LAT)Although still far behind music, television shows represent the fastest-growing type of files downloaded online. And as downloads increase, executives have to figure out how to convince people it's stealing. LAT: Guilds cry foul on royalties for downloads of ABC shows.
NYT's Elisabeth Bumiller Will Take Leave to Write Condi Bio (NYO)Executive editor Bill Keller has told Bumiller's husband, Times diplomatic correspondent Steven Weisman, that he must relinquish the State Department beat to avoid the perception of a conflict of interest.
Bids for Knight in the Works (San Jose Mercury News)As a deadline nears for submitting bids for Knight Ridder, MediaNews and Gannett are working on a joint bid, according to a source familiar with the process. Sources said the McClatchy newspaper chain also is preparing a bid.
Many Challenge WaPo Claims on Death Toll in Iraq (E&P)According to a Washington Post report yesterday, violence in Iraq killed more than 1,300 in the past few days, many times the figure reported by the U.S. media and the military. But Iraq Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari called such high death totals "inaccurate and exaggerated."
Did Nancy Grace 'James Frey' Her Myth? (NYO)Rebecca Dana: Every crime-fighting superhero has a creation story. Nancy Grace, the prosecutor turned star at CNN Headline News, has a particularly moving one about a murdered former boyfriend and how his killer's trial moved her to seek justice for victims. But much of her story isn't true.
Weider Family Buys Back Into Mags (NYP)The family that sold its fitness magazine empire to American Media for $360 million is back in the publishing business. It just spent an estimated $15 million to buy the 10-title history magazine group from Primedia. [Second item.]
Media Red-Faced Over Bode (Marketwatch)Jon Friedman: The media's miscalculation in promoting Bode Miller raises some questions: Were they all blinded by the light of putting a bad boy on the cover in the hope of making news themselves? Is it better, in hindsight, to go for a more conventional cover subject (who has a stronger work ethic)? FishbowlNY: Bad boy by the numbers.
Radical Restructuring of Online News Needed? (OJR)Robert Niles: Despite new search-related strategies, most news websites haven't changed structurally over the past decade. And that is costing online news publishers significantly, both in terms of lost readers and lost revenue.
The 17th Friggin' Season of The Real World (Slate)Troy Patterson: As usual, these kids are spoiling for drama. They leave us with only the usual, apocalypse-of-the-week questions: Is there no decency? Will the younger generation demolish the grammatical distinction between "less" and "fewer"? Why haven't we taught our children how to hold their liquor?

A Peak Inside the Oscar Security Blanket [FishbowlLA]Gone are the heady days where one might throw on a tux, snort 5 or 6 grams of blow to take the edge off, and depart for the Oscars.
The Obligatory 'We Got Sold' Meeting? [FishbowlNY]We've been trying to get insight from some current Spin staffers on the whole thing, but, as you can imagine, they have things other than FishbowlNY on their minds. We're left with a lone eyewitness account of an alleged staff meeting: "There was just a big staff meeting here at Spin and some folks came out of the corner office looking, well, not so happy. One girl was in tears." That sucks, particularly when the girl's Courtney Love, and she doesn't even work there.
Books for a Better Life [GalleyCat]What were Jane Friedman, Larry Kirshbaum, David Young, Jane Dystel, Lynn Goldberg & Camille MacDuffie, Naomi Wolf, Martha Stout (both of whom appear on the left) and so many more doing there at the stiff sum of $175 a head? Taking part in the 10th Anniversary of Books for a Better Life, the awards ceremony hosted by the New York Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Preparing for That Assistant's Glory [Unbeige]Here's a good little thing that's been making the rounds: "How to Find a Design Job While Being Young, Naive, and Full of Hope." If you're a youngster in school, getting ready to head out here to where people like us have somehow been able to fight our way up a few hills and stay there, you're apt to read nothing short of ten million of these kinds of bits of advice.
Some Resources for Freelance Researchers [MBToolbox]It's matter-of-fact and it's often not glamorous, but performing some freelance research for publications can pay some bills.
