Muhammad Cartoon Flap a 'Failure' for the Press (WaPo)William Bennett and Alan Dershowitz: Over the past few weeks, the press has betrayed not only its duties but its responsibilities... SXSW Film Festival

This is not a party invitation (it’s more or less a way to shamelessly promote my latest creative endeavor) but you should read it anyway. Prom Date, a short documentary film which I directed, is having its US premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival in good old Austin, Texas on March 12th. The film follows an upper-east side private high school student as she tries to find a date for her prom on the internet.
Apparently someone down there at SXSW likes it because it will actually screen for a second time on March 14th. For those of you who don’t care, I’m sorry. And for those of you who do, I’m also sorry, but in a different way. Hopefully Prom Date will be playing in NYC at some point soon. And then I can throw a big party with free drinks and bother you with something a little more relevant to your life. But until then all I can really offer is a link to the SXSW website(which I’m told can be a party in and of itself). http://2006.sxsw.com/film/screenings

How to Register:
Center for Communication On-Location Workshops provide students with
a great opportunity to meet informally with media professionals to
get an inside look at the inner-workings of New York's major
communications companies.
These visits give under-graduates who are seeking jobs in media the
chance to interact with high-level movers and shakers; make valuable
industry contacts; learn where the jobs are and how to prepare for
specific careers; and have their questions answered directly by
those in the know. Be sure to review the following format and rules
for participation:
• When you register via e-mail (info@cencom.org) or by phone (212-
686-5005), make sure to list your first name, last name, school
affiliation, daytime telephone number and e-mail address. If you are
leaving a phone message, please speak slowly and clearly.
• Workshop attendance is limited to between 10-15 students only.
This means if you don't show up or cancel in advance, you are
depriving another student of the opportunity to attend. If you
register, but find you can not attend, be sure to call or e-mail the
Center immediately to make room for someone on the waiting list.
• When we contact you to confirm your attendance as the date
approaches, you must respond quickly, otherwise we will move on to
the next student on the list.
• When your attendance is confirmed, you will then receive the exact
time, address, and meeting details.
• Workshops are highly participatory. Familiarize yourself with the
host company -- most have Websites. If your are visiting a TV or
radio show, be sure to watch or listen to the show; if it is a
magazine, read the magazine…you get the idea. Come prepared with at
least three pertinent questions and be proactive. These are rare
opportunities -- get the most out of them!
• Last but not least, dress professionally and please arrive on time!

yearnings clash as they await major life events... the death of a family member, the blossoming of a young romance, the return of a husband. Life At Bay explores living in the moment, and the drifting feeling of being in limbo even while there is so much going on.
SPACE AVAILABLE Dir by KATHILYNN PHILLIPS 16-minutes In 2025, no baby can be born and remain alive unless at the moment of birth, or within sixty seconds thereafter, there is space available. An L.A. County sheriff's deputy visited the home of Britney Spears yesterday to question the pop star about driving with her baby on her lap. The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) notified police that Spears may have failed to use proper child restraint. "We did go out as a courtesy for DCFS," Sheriff's Department spokesman Ban Nguyen told us. "They asked us to go out there and get some information."

Busta Rhymes' infamous thug-life weekend started early, according to a photographer who says the rapper and his four bodyguards attacked him last Friday. You know about the gunman who killed a security guard working Busta's video shoot Sunday night in Brooklyn. Though detectives believe the rapper was trying to make peace in that incident, lensman Justin Baggoo said Rhymes couldn't have been more belligerent when Baggoo tried to take his picture as he left a midtown restaurant.

Lindsay Lohan is skewing older. In Touch claims the 19-year-old has been "quietly seeing" 31-year-old singer Ryan Adams. The mag also contends she "hooked up with" 38-year-old Benicio Del Toro last Sunday. He went out to help his sometime girlfriend Sara Foster celebrate her birthday, "but he dumped her to party with Lindsay," says the mag. After "spending hours canoodling, the couple headed to the Mercer Hotel." Lohan's rep tells us, "She's not dating either of these wonderful men."… Colin Farrell celebrated the start of "Pride and Glory" with co-stars Edward Norton and Noah Emmerich at Barolo. A rep for the rehabbed actor says that was Diet Pepsi in his glass. Even though a fan asked if he could take a photo of the group, an angry Farrell insisted on removing the film from the guy's camera. He also later chased away a guy chatting up one of his female tablemates. … Kimora Lee Simmons dirty-danced with Knicks guard Stephon Marbury at Butter on Monday. "She was standing behind him grinding, holding onto his jeans," squealed a spy, adding that Kimora's hubby, Russell Simmons, was nowhere in sight. "Kimora Lee had a great time with her friends to celebrate her upcoming book 'Fabulosity,'" explained her rep. "Your source needs to read page 229, law 14 — Defy the Haters!" … George Clooney can't resist making some fast money on foreign ads. Donald Trump Jr.'s model bride, Vanessa, recently wore her best bikini to audition for a European martini ad that's due to feature Clooney. While she waits for her callback, the gorgeous Mrs. Trump will be among those modeling designer Anand Jon's AJ Jeans at Fizz tonight.
Is indie-movie denizen Vincent Gallo so desperate for attention — even if it's the bad kind?
Apparently, the answer is yes. The 43-year-old Gallo — or someone claiming to be the "Brown Bunny" writer-director-star who was pleasured onscreen by Chloe Sevigny — was selling himself on eBay yesterday. "For the modest fee of $50,000 plus expenses, I can fulfill the wish, dream, or fantasy of any naturally born female," reads the indecent proposal, under a glassy-eyed photo of Gallo, an avowed Republican, with one hand resting on his crotch.

Did we really need to know about Jon Bon Jovi's fear of fizzling? When Elle magazine asks the 43-year-old father of four which frightens him more — the prospect of losing his ability to perform on stage or perform in bed — he answers: "Impotence. I could always write songs, act, get into politics or stay at home with the kids, but I've got to have some fun." Apparently, Katie Couric might be helpful. "Her cheerleader thing definitely works for me." Too much infotainment!

PARIS Hilton, crime fighter? A Nancy Drew in a thong, Hilton proved crucial in the guilty plea yesterday by the man who was charged with burglarizing "Girls Gone Wild!" creator Joe Francis' home in 2004, and then hog-tying the video millionaire and videotaping him in sexually explicit positions. L.A. cops busted Darnell Riley after Francis told them that Hilton had overheard in December 2004 that Riley and another man were responsible for the home-invasion attack at Francis's Bel Air mansion. Riley also left his fingerprints on duct tape used to bind Francis. And raw "Girls Gone Wild" footage - stolen from Francis' home - was found in his possession. Riley copped to one count of robbery and one count of attempted extortion in L.A. yesterday. He was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in state prison.

ICAHN PLAN TO BREAK UP TW GATHERS MOMENTUM (NYT) In a display of grand corporate theater, Bruce Wasserstein and Carl Icahn shared a podium yesterday to step up their indictment of the management of Time Warner Inc. and argue their rationale for breaking the company into four separately traded public companies. NYP: Icahn said that media companies need "visionary leaders," and suggested that Dick Parsons is clearly not one. LAT: Icahn says his proposal could lift stock price 43 percent. NY Sun Investors opt out of TW class action suit. Folio: AOL Media president looks to future of on-demand.

TURMOIL OVER CARTOONS BEGAN QUIETLY IN DENMARK (WAPO) The global furor over cartoons of the prophet Muhammad can be traced to one day last September when newspaper editor Flemming Rose smelled a good story. WaPo: Controversy may hurt U.S. efforts in Muslim world. Salon: The Danish paper that printed the cartoons wanted to stir up trouble — and the government wanted a culture war. They got more than they bargained for. TMN: Part of the problem is that the cartoons in question are so bad as to be unintelligible, so their defenders and their offendees stake their position solely on their principles, writes Choire Sicha. USAT: Media draw the line on running cartoons. NYP: Four NY Press editors resign over management decision not to publish cartoons.

"It could end up being the biggest photo sale of all time." The price tag could reach $4 million. CJR Daily: A Reuters and CNN.com report about the Brangelina phenomenon talked about the to the "crazed media" having "reached the point of insanity." But upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that when Reuters and CNN.com refer to the "media" they are not actually including themselves.

BEHIND THE TWBG DEAL: UK POSSIBILITIES AND FIREWORKS GALORE! [GALLEYCAT] This is where it gets interesting: Ursula MacKenzie will join Hachette Livre UK's board and continue as TWBG UK CEO, but she will report to Tim Hely Hutchinson, who will additionally become deputy chairman of Hachette Livre USA and a director of the TWBG USA and UK companies. So to sum up, it sounds like TWBG UK will essentially be reporting to Hodder Headline — and if so, will the companies remain separate entities, or will TWBG UK eventually be folded into Hodder's day-to-day activities?

Mash Up Album

JANET JACKSON AND DJ RESET RELEASE THEIR TRIBUTE TO SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE New York, NY
February 7, 2006 – "Thank You Nation 1814,” produced by DJ Reset, is a new track featuring elements of Janet Jackson's 1989 hit "Rhythm Nation" and Sly Stone's 1969 classic "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” The record is featured on “Different Strokes By Different Folks” (Epic/Legacy), a new, one of a kind collaboration album, re-imagining the timeless and influential hits of Sly and the Family Stone by a current generation of chart-topping stars also including Maroon 5, The Roots, John Mayer, Moby, John Legend, and many others. Critically acclaimed New York-based producer DJ Reset (aka Jeremy Brown) recently made history with the first commercially released mash-up ever, "Frontin' on Debra," a brilliant hybrid of Beck's "Debra" and Pharrell Williams & Jay-Z's "Frontin'." The single was called "miraculous" by The New York Post and "a surprisingly Stevie Wonder-esque delight" by Rolling Stone Magazine. "To have access to the original Sly Stone Master Recordings is a dream for any producer," commented Brown, "I am also really flattered that Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis agreed to do this thing." Sly and the Family Stone are credited as one of the first racially integrated bands in music history, belting their message of peace, love, and social consciousness through a string of hit anthems that fused R&B, Soul, Funk, and Rock 'n' Roll. On "Different Strokes by Different Folks," a stylistically, culturally, and racially disparate group of chart-toppers mirrors that idealistic diversity. A complete track listing is below. CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: ICONS OF HIP-HOP Seeking contributors for Icons of Hip-hop, a two-volume narrative reference collection to be published by Greenwood Press. This collection will consist of 10,000 word biographical essays on hip-hops 24 most important artists. Some of the artists currently available to contributors include Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Lil Kim, Master P, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube. Each 10,000 word essay will profile the life and career of a hip-hop artist (or group) and discuss the specific contributions that make the figure a hip-hop icon. For some artists these contributions will be stylistic developments, and for others raising awareness of womens roles, of regional music scenes, etc. For earlier artists, essays will include an examination of their current roles or continuing influence. Your entry should refer to other hip-hop artists (collaborators, adversaries, label-mates, etc) whose careers intersect with that of the icon. Essays will be supported by several sidebars that place the icons within cultural and historical context. Harvard's Tuition Announcement Highlights Failure of Prestigious Universities to Enroll Low-Income Students. From now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H.
